Yakumi's World

This is the story of 5 year old Yakumi.  In a cruel twist of fate she suffered a horrific accident and lies in a medically induced coma. Fortunately, she is not aware of any pain and blessed with a vivid imagination. Immersed in her dream world she commands a magic bubble in which she feels safe and comfortable.  The bubble takes her to a far away island with coconut trees, white sand, waters full of colorful fish and all sorts of curious animals. In no hurry to wake up there is time to explore!

Title Theme: The title scene hints at a mysterious and wondrous dream world, Yakumi is floating in her dream bubble under a starry night sky.

Sleep and Dream: In the heartbreaking opening scene, we see a life support machine, then the camera zooms out to reveal a 5 year old girl in a hospital bed. Yakumi lies in a deep coma, while her grandmother is holding her hand. The woman – her tears long dry – is clinging to an impossibly thin thread of hope. Yakumi's parents were killed in the unspecified accident that tore her out of this world – and into her own world.

Sunnybubble Island: The sun is shining in Yakumi's World. Sitting in her comfy dream bubble she is soaring over a sandy beach, through a grove of coconut trees and over a shallow reef full of colorful fish, jellyfish, and corals. Today's goal is to catch one fish of each kind. There is plenty of room in her bubble, and what better passengers are there than fish? They tend to be very talkative company.

Grandma's House: Grandma's home is always only a short bubble jump away, this time conveniently on Sunnybubble Island. Where else to get the best noodles in the world and gummy worms for your fish friends?

Escape the Dream Eaters: Yakumi  is suddenly attacked by Dream Eaters. She finds it hard to describe the otherworldly beings. Sometimes they form from bubbles and take seemingly human shapes, other times they look like flashing blobs of light. In any case they are dangerous. If they burst her bubble, she will wake from her dream! Fortunately, Yakumi is the best bubble pilot in the world and able to outmaneuver them.

Dance of the Ducklings: Yakumi is not quite sure where she ended up after escaping the Dream Eaters, but she reached an idyllic pond when following a small stream. She releases her fish as they do get annoying over time, then she spends the rest of the day watching the dance of little ducklings.

What adventures will the next day bring?

Ending Theme: After a very long time, Yakumi's memory of the "other world" is fading.  She is happy as a clam in her beautiful dream world, and she thinks she can stay here forever with her animal friends. She will always have grandma by her side, after all. We see a parade of all the animals and awesome places on Sunnybubble Island, Yakumi cheering through all of it. The very last frame goes back to the hospital room, then the life support machine, and we see that it has stopped.

Trivia:

  • "Yakumi" in Japanese are the spices and condiments added to food. Our girl Yakumi has been known to enhance everyone's happiness with her presence.
  • Music was made in FL Studio 21 with midi instruments played by me. Had a lot of fun shredding with the last track. :)
  • Artwork made with artificial talent on perchance.org
  • As an exercise I tried to use the main theme/motif in every track in one form or another. Can you find them?

I really enjoyed the calm and catchy theme all along the OST.

Sounds beautiful and charming.

Great job and great story!

hell, this game idea kicks butt.

also, why did you have to make the ending so painful...
